About The Autumn Store Blog

It’s just occurred to me that you may have stumbled across this blog and not have a bloody clue where you are or why you might want to be here - so a quick overview is in order!

The Autumn Store is a DIY Indiepop night based in Birmingham, UK - run by me, Dunc. This is it’s blog!

The blog is mainly around indiepop because that’s the style of music I seem to keep going back to - but the blog covers all sorts, especially if it’s made by a Birmingham band because there’s a lot of talented bands performing many different styles here. Generally reviews are tagged with “review” and gigs that I’ve been to are tagged with “gigs”. Good old logic.

I think that small scale DIY is important. More important to music than a national music industry. It’s easier to start a band now than it ever has been, but it’s also just as easy to DJ/put bands on and start an indie night, or burn 50 CDRs of your friend’s band and start an indie label. I play in bands too so hopefully I can give my take on things as a promoter trying to get enough people through the door to cover room hire, and musician who rarely gets paid for gigs. Promoting tips on how to make more people find out about your gigs are tagged “promoting”. I’ve never owned a record label. Everyone else seems to have one at the moment though.

I’ll try and give you heads-up about good Birmingham gigs which I’ll be attending. Not at all in a comprehensive pattern though - JDTraynor has a superb myspace group which lists almost all Birmingham (and West Midlands) gigs.

I’m hopefully going to start working out chords to indiepop songs I like and put them up here too.

Oooh, one last thing. I’m a bit of a geeky type and inspired by music + maths = sexy, I’m making a note of any relationships I find in the world of music and expressing them algebraically. One day when I have loads of equations I’m hoping that some nifty substitutions will prove something like Happiness = (number of major chords / by number of people listening) to the power of the number of facebook groups they belong to. I have no idea what practical applications this has, but it wouldn’t be maths if I knew what the equations were for before formulating them.

Don’t forget to leave a comment or have a look at gig’s we’ve got coming up. The main Autumn Store website is here - and in the links section you can find our myspace/facebook/last fm/what ever the kids will be using in the future.

Cool, happy reading and good luck.

Or should that be “thank you, come again”.
